A safe workplace needs a team that openly communicates safety concerns. Take the Hazard Huddle challenge to hold a discussion with your workers about the hazards they may face on the job and where workplace hazards exist. Use this information to perform a job hazard analysis, reduce risks and make your workplace safer.
Plan a discussion to ask workers targeted questions about potential workplace safety hazards. Include staff with varied experience levels and roles for a wide range of expertise.
Discussion questions may include:
Where have you or your coworkers had “close calls” that could have caused an injury? What happened?
How have you been hurt or injured on the job? What happened?
Describe a worst-case scenario for an injury on the job. Where and how might this happen?
Are there jobs they perform where our operating procedures do not align?
What jobs are typically assigned to newer and less experienced staff? How could they get hurt doing these tasks?
Take notes during the meeting to prioritize where to conduct a job hazard analysis. Managers preparing to implement hazard controls are reminded to be sure to include staff whose jobs may be affected by those decisions.
