OSHA has published a final rule updating the Hazard Communication Standard, aligning it primarily with the 7th revision of the United Nations’ Globally Harmonized System of Classifying and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). The final rule is effective July 19, 2024, and has a phased set of compliance deadlines.
The modifications to the standard include:
Revised criteria for classification of certain health and physical hazards
Revised provisions for updating labels
New labeling provisions for small containers
New provisions related to trade secrets
Technical amendments related to the contents of safety data sheets
Revisions to definitions of terms used in the standard
