Beginning June 23, 2025 the FMCSA Medical Examiner’s Certification Integration rule will go into effect, changing how DOT medical exam results are reported for applicants/holders of commercial learner's permits (CLPs) and commercial driver's licenses (CDLs). This rule will require certified medical examiners (ME) to electronically transmit exam results directly to FMCSA, which will then forward them to State Drivers Licensing Agency (SDLA) for integration into each driver’s motor vehicle record.
Here's a breakdown of the changes:
Electronic Submission:
Medical examiners will submit exam results electronically to the FMCSA.
Automatic Updates:
The FMCSA will then forward the results to the driver's state licensing agency, State Driver Licensing Agencies (SDLA).
No More Paper Cards:
Drivers will no longer need to submit their own paper medical examiner certificates (MEC).
Updated Driver Records:
The driver's Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) will be updated with the medical certification status.
No Verification Needed:
Motor carriers will no longer be required to verify that CDL/CLP drivers were certified by a medical examiner listed on the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (NRCME).
We recommend scheduling exams well before a current MEC expires to prevent a gap in certification. Examination results may take three or more business days to be posted to the driver’s motor vehicle record.
These changes do not affect non-CDL holders. MEs will continue to provide non-CDL holders with the original paper MEC and motor carriers will still need to verify that the ME who signed and issued the MEC is listed on the National Registry.
