The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has announced that this year’s Brake Safety Week will take place August 24–30. The focus for 2025 is on the condition of brake drums and rotors.
Throughout the week, commercial motor vehicle inspectors will conduct roadside inspections to emphasize the importance of properly functioning brake systems. Vehicles found with brake-related out-of-service violations will be removed from the road until the issues are corrected.
Brake drum and rotor problems can reduce braking efficiency and pose serious risks. Broken components may detach while driving, potentially damaging other vehicles or causing serious injuries.
To help you prepare, here are some tips from inspectors to avoid issues during a roadside inspection:
Include a visual check of drums and rotors during your pre- and post-trip inspections.
Watch for cracks or broken areas in the rotor’s friction surface.
Check for cracks that reach the drum's outer edge or missing sections.
On disc brakes, heavily rusted rotors across the friction surface may signal an inoperative brake.
Grooved rotors may indicate worn brake pads and metal-to-metal contact.
If the rotor is worn to the point that center vents are visible, it’s time for replacement.
Ensure all repairs follow the manufacturer’s specifications and guidelines.
Record any issues in your Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports and notify your motor carrier.
Being proactive about brake maintenance helps keep your vehicle safe—and keeps you on the road.
