Overview

Each motor carrier must make an inquiry to each State where the driver held or holds a motor vehicle operator’s license or permit during the preceding three years, to obtain that driver’s motor vehicle record. This must be done for each driver the motor carrier employs. A copy must be placed in the driver qualification file within 30 days of the date the driver’s employment begins, and annually thereafter.

Beginning June 23, 2025, for a driver required to have a commercial driver’s license or a commercial learner’s permit, the motor carrier must obtain the CDLIS motor vehicle record to verify the medical certification status information.
