Overview
Each truck, truck tractor and bus must be equipped with warning devices for stopped vehicles.
One of the following options must be used:
- Three bidirectional emergency reflective triangles that conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 125; or
- At least 6 fusees or 3 liquid-burning flares. Each fusee must be capable of burning for 30 minutes and each liquid-burning flare must contain enough fuel to burn continuously for at least 60 minutes.
- Other warning devices may be used in addition to the required warning devices, provided those warning devices do not decrease the effectiveness of the required warning devices. Red flags, if used, must not be less than 12 inches square and must be able to maintain an upright position.
Flame producing devices, such as liquid burning flares, fusees and oil lanterns, are not allowed under any of the following circumstances:
- Any motor vehicle carrying Division 1.1, 1.2 or 1.3 explosives;
- Any cargo tank vehicle used to transport Division 2.1 flammable gas or Class 3 (flammable liquid); and
- Any commercial motor vehicle using compressed gas as a fuel.
