Overview

Engineering controls, work practices, personal protective equipment (PPE), or a combination of these, must be implemented to protect employees from exposure to hazardous substances and safety and health hazards. PPE must be selected and used which will protect employees from the hazards and potential hazards they are likely to encounter. PPE must be evaluated based on the performance characteristics of the PPE and limitations of the site, the task-specific conditions and duration and the hazards identified at the site.

Department of Transportation (DOT) specified salvage drums or containers and suitable quantities of proper absorbent shall be kept available and used in areas where spills, leaks or ruptures may occur (29 CFR 1910.120(j)(1)(vii)).
