Prohibitions or restrictions on smoking exist throughout the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) general industry regulations. Listed below areexamples that typically apply to a retail farm center.

1910.106(f)(6) – Class I liquids must not be handled, drawn or dispensed where flammable vapors may reach a source of ignition. Smoking must be prohibited except in designated localities. No Smoking signs must be conspicuously posted where hazard from flammable liquid vapors is normally present. This includes bulk pesticide storage areas, chemical warehouses, fueling areas and parts washers with solvent.

1917.157(c) – No Smoking signs must be conspicuously posted where batteries are charged. Smoking and other ignition sources are prohibited in charging areas.

1910.272(e)(1)(i) – No Smoking signs must be conspicuously posted where hazards related to dust accumulations may occur, such as in grain or feed storage and handling areas. Employers must train employees on general safety precautions associated with the facility, including recognition and preventive measures for the hazards related to dust accumulations and common ignition sources, such as smoking.
