Overview

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) provides safeguards to reduce the hazards associated with the storage, handling and use of flammable and combustible liquids in NFPA 30: Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code. Unsupervised, isolated aboveground storage tanks must be secured and marked to identify the fire hazards of the tank and its contents. The area in which the storage tank is located must be protected from tampering or trespassing. Some type of device must be installed on storage tanks to prevent tampering during non-business hours. Each storage tank must be closed and locked, or the facility must be locked, whenever the facility is unattended.
