Overview

Used oil filters that have been properly drained are excluded from the definition of hazardous waste by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Non-terne (lead) plated used oil filters that are not mixed with wastes are not hazardous wastes if these oil filters have been gravity hot-drained using one of the following methods:
- Puncturing the filter anti-drain back valve or the filter dome end and hot-draining;
- Hot-draining and crushing;
- Dismantling and hot-draining; or
- Any other equivalent hot-draining method that will remove used oil.
