Overview

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) establishes criteria under which filtration is required as a treatment technique for public water systems supplied by a surface water source and public water systems supplied by a ground water source under the direct influence of surface water. Wellheads must be effectively sealed so that surface water or rain water may not enter a well casing. Water supplies, including wellhead protection, are protected by state regulatory programs.
