Top 5 Visual Red Flags Inspectors Can See During an Audit

Before an auditor opens a single binder or asks for one record, they are already evaluating your operation with their eyes. The physical condition of your facility, your storage areas, your shelves, and your safety stations tells a compliance story the moment they step through the door. These five visual red flags below are among the most commonly observed during agriculture retail inspections — and every one of them can be corrected before an auditor ever schedules a visit.

Red Flag #1: Poor housekeeping and uncleaned spills/debris

Visible spills, dust buildup, standing water, or clutter in storage/warehouse areas (no immediate cleanup). This indicates weak housekeeping controls, pest attraction risks, and non-compliance with good storage practices.

Red Flag #2: Lack of or Improper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

If there are no gloves, respirators, goggles, or chemical-resistant aprons visible or accessible near chemical handling areas, auditors note it immediately as a worker safety concern. Another flag is workers handling chemicals without gloves, goggles, or respirators indicate both training and enforcement failures.

Red Flag #3: Emergency Equipment Blocked or Missing

Auditors notice when fire extinguishers are blocked or missing inspection dates.  Exit doorways are blocked or concealed.  Also, where applicable, eyewash/safety showers are blocked or dry.  These areas need to be accessible at all times.

Red Flag #4: Damaged, leaking, corroded, or improperly sealed containers

Visible rust, tears, leaks, or bulging bags/drums of pesticides, fertilizers, or chemicals. This indicates poor maintenance, potential spills, contamination risks, and failure to inspect/rotate stock, which can lead to environmental violations or product degradation.

Red Flag #5: Unsafe Ladder, Platform, or Fall Protection Practices

Improper use/storage of ladders, unguarded platforms or lack of fall protection where workers are exposed to heights.

If you would not be comfortable with an auditor walking in unannounced today, that is your action item.

Walk your own facility with fresh eyes at least once per quarter. Use a physical checklist, note what you see, and assign corrections with a deadline. A proactive walkthrough costs nothing. A citation costs far more.

Contact the Asmark Team if you are concerned that your facility is not ready for a visit.
