FMCSA Re-Issues Temporary Waiver for Medical Certification Documentation
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has re-issued a temporary waiver that allows interstate commercial driver’s license (CDL) holders, commercial learner’s permit (CLP) holders, and motor carriers to continue using a paper copy of the medical examiner’s certificate as proof of medical qualification.
Under this waiver, drivers may rely on the paper certificate for up to 60 days from the date it is issued. The waiver is effective January 11, 2026, through April 10, 2026.
FMCSA reissued this waiver to help prevent unnecessary hardship for drivers who hold valid medical certifications, as well as their employers, in light of potential processing delays that are beyond their control.
To further support compliance during this period, FMCSA recommends that certified medical examiners continue issuing paper medical examiner’s certificates (Form MCSA-5876) to drivers, in addition to submitting exam results electronically, until further notice.
